Hotel choices in Shenzhen, China

By Preston Wily

If you're traveling in Shenzhen China you're probably interested in the hotel choices available. Before I went to China I was always reassured by friends that the hotel rooms would be large, the facilities 5-star and life would be good.

Now, some of these things are true, but in general a 5-star hotel would be considered a 4-star in the US. You will need to do a little research to make sure that you are staying in the kind of place you want to stay in.

Here are my recommendations:
In Luohu, you will want to consider the Shangri-La or the Best Western right by the railway station. The Shangri-La is a 5-star (by American standards). The Best Western, billed as a 4-star, would be considered a 3-star hotel. They have a nice lobby and reception area, but the rooms are rundown.

If you are in Futian you should definitely check out the new 5-star JW Marriott. it has a fantastic pool and is in the heart of the action (you can easily jump on a train that will take you anywhere in Shenzhen). The facilities are top-notch - as an American chain doing business in China they maintain the high quality of standard that has been set.

If you are traveling in the Longhua District, you may enjoy the Dragon Spring. This is an out-of-the-way hotel for most anybody (unless you happen to be working with Foxconn, who has a factory and offices very close). For shopping you will want to be in Luohu or Futian.

If you happen to find yourself in Tian Du you will find a great hotel by the same name. Hotel Tian Du is clean, large and very nice. The only drawback is the employees speak very little English. This is not surprising since the hotel is Chinese-owned.
